Defrag wont work

My defrag wont start. How can I repair it?
Windows Xp home.

First, clean up your computer first by using clean up, emptying all temp
folders, Internet Temporary Files, on and offline. Then try it but do a
ChkDsk prior to trying to defrag again. If that doesn't work, try doing it
in Safe Mode.

Are you using a limited user or an admin account?

How much free space does the drive have available? (Run disk
clean up before defrag)

Do you get any error messages? What are they? Are there any clues in
Event Viewer (Start>Run eventvwr.msc [enter])? What are they?
