defrag uses 100% cpu even paused

Defrag started OK on an IDE 279GB volume mounted on an empty folder of 3
drive SATA Raid . It seems to be stuck about 65 to 66%. that was about 10
hours after defrag start time. the volume has only about 80GB of data. CPU
consumption by defrag shoots up to almost 100% at about 66% completed, after
all almost visible fragment has disappeared from screen. High CPU
consumption by defrag continues even when paused. Cpu consumption stops upon
stop button. clicking the defrag button again was able to go pass the 65%
quite quickly.

config: XP Pro with latest patches less today's release, AMD Athlon X64
3700+ on Asus A8N-CM CSM. cool and quiet not turned on and room temperature
(71 degree F). Exhaust from computer just the usual warmness - definitely
not running hot

This is the first time ever I see defrag consume substantial CPU cycles when
paused

You defraged for 10 hours !!!!Must be a world record for the idiot club...
No utility should run for more than 15-20 min max, unless you see advancement,
after that time exit the service.Taking into account youve run disk clean up,
CHKDSK,at a recent time,go to run,type:cmd In cmd type:Defrag C: When its
thru,type:EXIT

thx for replay but no answer was to why it happened.

I got around the problem already if you read on further in my prep msg.

I wonder who would be the nice and smart one to point out why or what it
happened instead of some irrelevant comments.

BTW the command defrag does a decent job but sometimes for some reason the
GUI based interface results is slightly better. multiple defrag command
successively to get to a point of no improvement but sometimes the gui
based one will defrag even more.
