Defrag Still Won't

I have had xp installed for about 4 weeks now having upgraded fromME any way
try as I may when I go to defrag it analizes goes to defrag and stips on 1%
forever and I mean hours I have stopped my screen save I have installed all
updates (as told to by my local PC shop) but no it isn't having it.
When I defraged in ME I use to use control/alt/delete and used to shut down
everything except for explorer and system and it used to work fine, but when
I do this a huge list comes up now and as I work my way through them I look
up and it says windows is going to shut now ( obviously I stopped something I
shouldn't have) and then I am back to square 1
I got the 2 answers (ta) about the diskeeper which I duely downloaded and
left it defraging over night just to come down to it defraged 24% so I did
the next thing defrag in safe mode,...half a day later it got to 27% I am at
my wits end now I have AVG installed and I have disabled that PLEASE help

How much free space exists on your hard drive, having upgraded to XP.. the
OS plus SP2 and all updates is much larger than ME, and defrag needs 15% or
more free space in order to strut its stuff..

free space is 17.1gb

....... almost 50% free .. OK, it could be then that you have lost
clusters on your drive.. right click on My Computer and then click on
'Manage'.. in the window that opens, look under the 'storage' heading for
'disk management'.. now right click the drive that is giving you problems
and select 'properties' from the dd menu.. you want to ERROR CHECK your
drive so click on the tab and follow any onscreen instructions..

Then try Defrag after the error check has finished..

Reboot into Safe Mode and run defrag from there.

Oops! I see you have already tried Safe Mode.

Have you run a complete virus / spyware scan lately?

Hi Mr Hall me again I did what you said and although it never gave me any
information I went to run defrag again after I did it and it said I didn't
have to, so obviously something right happened!!! I just wanted to thankyou
