I'm running XP Home, and when I run defrag, it will compress the files, but
as soon as it tries to move a file the computer reboots. When I run a
checkdisk it will get to step 4, then it freezes at about 14%. Anyone have
any ideas?

Thanks.

Make sure you have a full and complete backup of all data. Download a
drive diagnostic utility from the drive manufacturer's website and run
that to check the drive.

Try it in Safe Mode.
