I need a good Defrag program for Vista. I was using Norton
Systemworks, but it does not appear they will update it for Vista.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Even though I'm a longtime Diskeeper user, and still prefer it for XP,
Raxco's PerfectDisk is simply awesome on Vista.

What setting do you use with this? I find it doesn't pack the files near the
top as it used to do under XP but I'm afraid to change the settings from
default until I find the consequences acceptable.

Auslogics Disk Defrag is FREE and works with vista 32 and 64, also gives that neat little moving boxes display while it is doing its work.
be aware you need to do some system cleanup for any defrag to do its job the best it can.
IE cache, restore , event logs, all need to be purged.
also do a disk cleanup helps.

Norton 360 is the SystemWorks on steroids for VISTA .....

I've used the public BETA but for me it has too much in it! I'm back to
using Norton Internet Security.

But if you want a complete package that duplicates a lot of stuff that
is in VISTA then Norton 360 is worth looking at. Niether it nor NIS2007
seem to hog the system like earlier versions.

Hugh,
I have NIS2007 and use it including NAV, but I don't see a Defrag
program in it - am I missing something?

I am currently using System Mechanic 7 on Vista and am quite happy with it.
It does all the cleaning, fixes the registry and defrags as well. Beta
tested Norton 360 - didn't like it. Also dumped Norton from present Vista
system after 2 days - wouldn't update.

I'm using Diskeeper 2007 and it's got new technology that makes "real time"
defrag work without intrusive system performance impacts. It ain't free, to
be sure, but it works very well, indeed.

PerfectDisk 8.0 Build 58 is the only sensible way to go.

It works beautifully on XP too.

Not in the sense you mean it!

I use NIS 2007 on my XP Pro and on my VISTA partitions and I used
Diskkeeper 8 (?) on my XP Pro. I haven't bothered to install a specific
defragger on the VISTA partition since I don't see the need <g>

I'm influenced by the fact that what I have at the moment is running in
the grace period (extended) since I'll probably end up with Ultimate
and decide then what additional utilities to go for.

I'm not sure but I think Norton 360 does include defragging and other
stuff that you are used to from SystemWorks.

See:

to compare the different Norton Products.

Ah, found this on their Press page -- from a CNET review:

<< Features – “Symantec…designed Norton 360 from the ground up…pull
[ing] only the tools deemed most beneficial to the general user from
all its product lines. Norton 360 includes antivirus, antispyware,
antiphishing, antirootkit protection, a firewall, Symantec's new SONAR
(Symantec Online Network for Advance Response) behavioral monitoring
software, and a vulnerability assessment tool to see what Windows
updates your computer might be missing. An add-on pack of online tools
includes Parental Control, Antispam, and other optional features such
as blocking private data from leaking onto the Internet. Norton 360
also includes tools to defragment your hard drive and clean up
temporary files and other clutter than could slow your PC down…[and] a
backup and recovery tool, and provides up to 2GB of free online
storage.” >>

Packing the files near the top of the drive isn't always the most
efficient layout either.

Yes I know of them but I was asking if the guy had actually used
Diskkeeper 7 on VISTA?
