Defrag problems re cable internet interruptions? SOS' app's name? (or is there better solution?)

F

I think that my cable internet is the culprit. I haven't defragged in
a long time, granted, because I tend to do a wipe/reinstall before I
needing to scandisk/defrag. But this time around, I'm trying to avoid
all the hassle of this by attempting a disk image. But before doing
that I wanted to "backup" my storage partition which means
scandisking/defragging and I decided to do both drives anyway so that
what I also copy from C is clean.

Scandisk worked fine yesterday, I did that in DOS. But even with
everything shut down, defrag keeps getting interrupted. I started
this at noon yesterday and it's only managed to defrag 60% of just the
C drive alone. Every few minutes it has to go back to the beginning
and start up the process again. Then it gets 1 or 2% along, and
there's a change and it then goes back and starts from the beginning
again. <sigh> Very frustrating. Was wondering what to do besides
unhooking the cable internet (which I'm loathe to do).

I believe SOS had an app that will shut everything down for one but
don't know if the cable internet gets affected by this app, too, so
that it doesn't interfere with this process. I just did a search in
SOS' site, though, and couldn't find it as I don't remember what it's
called.

Does anyone remember what this app is? Or, perhaps, they know of a
better way? I know that the defrag will take time due to how long
it's been since I reinstalled on a clean system but it shouldn't be
taking this long.

I'd like to resolve this particular issue as the next bit, imaging and
then doing the formatting/OS resintall will take the rest of the spare
time I have today so that everything is more or less up and running
for the week.

Thanks and appreciate any help.

Cheers!

Why be loathe about that? Wont it still be there when you rehook it? Seems
like the simplist solution and it only takes a second to unhook, no software
needed! Cable means always on which means always probing which means always
interrupting things like defragging.

What about hitting control shift tab on bootup to choose network options,
and choosing not to be hooked up to the net?

All the best,

You need to unhook from your cable connection as suggested by others. And
the utility you are looking for is most likely End-It-All.

I think the program you've alluded to is EndItAll which is still a
freebie. (EndItAll2 is not free.)

I have EndItAll protect Zone Alarm when I shut down
programs/processes, but when I defrag I click on Zone Alarm's option
to shut down access to the Internet so there won't be activity. If you
have a firewall, you surely must have the same option, right?

Er...ah...you *do* use a firewall, right?

I believe the program you are referring to is GEODisk. A newer version is now
available. It's an awesome program that works well & does indeed shutdown
everything first before defragding.

Hope this helps

I am going to assume this is for Win 98. I am also going to assume that
you are talking about the boot menu that allows you to choose how you
would like your computer to boot up ex. Normal, safe mode....

Easiest way is to download Tweak UI from Microsoft and find the tab that
says boot and select your options.

For win 98, ME, 2K: Link may wrap.

One more:

ScanDefrag

ScanDefrag is a small utility program that configures and runs
Microsoft's or Norton's disk utilities as part of the next Window's
startup process. This can result in less restarts and cleaner runs. Read
the readme file for more information.

< snip >

Why on earth wouldn't you want to unhook your cable internet ?
It only takes a few seconds to unplug it from the back of your
computer and away you go with your scandisk/defrag.

If you leave the connection live then you would need to leave your
firewall active. That would be guaranteed to interfere with things.

My firewall (Kerio) has a option for "stop all traffic", and my cable
modem has an 'off' button..either way nothing happens when I don't
want it to...

Same here. In fact, my cable modem didn't come with an on-off switch,
so I made one and put it along the power cable. When I defrag, I
usually turn off the cable modem and shut down Kerio.

So does one of mine. The other however has a log file that still works
and can interfere with scan/defrag.

I don't turn off my cable modem because that could result in the
allocation of a new IP (that I don't want). Better to just disconnect
from the back of the computer.
