defrag missing

D

db.·.. >

i discovered that when
i initiated defrag from the
properties dialog window,
i was getting a message that
the program wasn't installed
and for me to go to the add
and remove program of the
control panel.

but the error message is
also erroneous because
there is no add/remove
icon in a vista control panel.

fortunately after some researching
i found that defrag.exe could
be run from a cmd window in
vista.

so what happened to the
defrag console in vista?

can it be installed?

although there is a defrag.exe
i doubt there is a defrag.msc
add in, else it would have been
installed and working.

ok,

it seems the fix mentioned
at the link does work and
I am defragging at this time.

too bad there is no graphical
representation of the disk and
file movement.

seems graphical representations
in vista would have been top
priority.

never the less it works.

incidentally, I did have to modify
the notated drive letter in the line
for the registry key from c to d,
as it is where my o.s. is located.

thanks again.

ok,

Good to see you got a result

If you want to see something moving while defragging this program is basic
in it's GUI but is a very good defragger.
Power Defragmenter is a very advanced GUI for the Sysinternals core
application which takes defragmentation process to a whole new level. Power
Defragmenter is a GUI (Graphic User Interface) application for a program
called Contig created by Sysinternals.Contig was created by Mark Russinovich
and Bryce Cogswell.

ok,

I went to the link and found
the webpage for the powerdefrag-er.

I downloaded the two files as
instructed and ran the gui.

I saw a bunch of scrolling via the
command window, which I had
seen before using the contig
program.

however, I thought that the two
graphical representations on
the link were screenshots of
powerdefrag, that is until I
read the fine print.

so no big deal and I am sure some
third party software maker will
make and provide a visual image
and representation of file movement.

such a utility would be entertaining
for many of us who want to stare
mindlessly at the screen on occasion.

in any case, the contig is working
at this time and thanks for the tips.

what I think is feasible and realistic
is for an estimated time of completion
to be provided with an analysis of a
defragmentation level.

it would be helpful to know how
much time to allocate for defragging
while people can do other things.

further, I am not sure if there is a
feature built in the vista system,
but it would also be helpful to have
the option for the system to shut down
after defrag was completed.
