Command Prompt

What is the administrator command prompt for 'defrag.exe' in 'cmd'? I am
being asked when trying to open defrag.exe in cmd.
It seems windows defrag was hijacked by DiskeeperLite, a downloaded program
I thought was free, but turned out to be a mistake. When I want to run
defrag now, I am asked to reinstall it via add or remove programs, which is
not available in my Vista Home Premium, SP2, 32 bit.
Is there a way to recover it?
If not, that's not all bad, because I have 'Defraggler', which works quite
nicely.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Harry.

'cmd'?

You could have searched for the executable yourself at any time.

It's "\windows\system32\defrag.exe".

I would hope that the Diskeeper people would be able to provide
complete uninstall instructions. Their products have been well-
regarded, and I've heard some compliments about their support.

Which I did, but without much success, until now.
I managed to open cmd as administrator and also found the gui in
windows/system32.
It's "\windows\system32\defrag.exe".

I am going to follow that lead and see what happens.
Hopefully I will be able to restore normal functions.
Right now the program runs totally in the background, doing weekly
defragmentation on a schedule.
Thank you and MilesAhead for your help.

I think what he's getting at is the defrag.exe is replaced when
you put in a 3rd party defragger. Often the thing you see that
says "defrag.exe" is probably a symbolic link.

You might be right, but I hope not. It would be a very bad application
that can't be uninstalled without screwing up your system.

I used to use Diskkeeper's server version many years ago in an old job.
We liked it then, but who knows what state the product is in now.

I can tell you: when I wanted to run the program, they asked me to buy the
upgraded version, instead of running the free version I believed to have
downloaded.
The reason I downloaded Diskeeper was, that I have it installed on my
Windows ME machine and I like it there, but it is an older version (1.7 or
something).

At any rate, the regular access for windows defragmenter has been hijacked,
but I can easily get around it.
I had uninstalled Diskeeper, but this condition remained.

Thanks again for your assistance.

Hi Harry,

Could you not just use "sfc /scannow"?

I did the system scan and came up with no errors in my 'Windows Resource
Protection'.
I understand that it may not be
allowed to replace defrag.exe, but could you not just copy it back from
your Vista install disk or Recovery partition?

I plan on exploring that avenue.

don't know who he is-
has posted a
tutorial on how to do this, and I will post the link when I get off my
iPhone.

Richard

Thank you, Richard, your readiness to assist is very much appreciated.

Harry.
