the content indexing service is running or has been turned on at one time.
the CI files cannot be moved while the volume is active, and the indexing
service is running, so if you want to get a full defrag, you'll need to
temporarily disable the indexing service (from the service management
console), empty the catalogs if necessary, then at the command-line, type
the following:
FSUTIL USN DELETEJOURNAL /D C:
(assuming drive C: above, repeat for additional drives)
that will remove the USN change journal that the content indexing service
uses to build its catalogs of changed files, the files themselves don't get
deleted, just the journal that tracks which files have been changed. the
content indexer is a huge waste of resources, so unless you routinely need
to search for content/files on your system, then i recommend disabling the
service altogether, set it to manual, then choose Tune Performance from the
All Tasks menu of the Indexing Service Management Console, select the Never
used radio button, press OK, and that will turn off the service. remember,
you must turn off the service before windows will let you remove the USN
journal files.
