Running Win XP SP2. All attempts to run defrag fail. All that happens when I
initiate a defrag is that a DOS-like window appears for a split second and
disappears. Have attempted process aafter disabling my McAfee AV software and
still get same problem.

Have you tried other options:

How to Defragment Your Disk Drive Volumes in Windows XP

If running Disk Defragmenter in normal mode encounters problems try Safe
Mode. Removing Temporary Internet Files ( all user profiles ) and emptying
the Recycle Bin can help avoid problems.

Does chkdsk when run complete?

Hope this helps.

Open a command prompt first...
Start | Run | Type: cmd | Click OK |
In the command prompt type: defrag /? and hit your Enter key.

Or, to open the GUI version...
Start | Run | Type: dfrg.msc | Click OK

Or..
Start\All Programs\Accessories\System Tools\Disk Defragmenter

Thanks for advice.

Tried the CMD route as GUI will not work. In Task Manager I have two apps
running that appear to be defrag related: DEFRAG.EXE and DFRGNTFS.EXE.

CMD screen shows Drive info (ie fragmentation info), but no indication of
progress of process. Should there be some indication of progress?

How To Fix Windows Built in Defragmenter

This fix worked for me. dfrgntfs.exe was crashing. Both from defrag.exe in
a command prompt and dfrg.msc.

Start | Run Type: regsvr32 dfrgui.dll | Click OK

Start | Run Type: regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll | Click OK

Navigate to...
%windir%\inf\ | Right click dfrg.inf | Select Install
