I have looked but haven't found much.

Are there any references to the logic used in Disk Defragmentation ?

I was also wondering about the O.S.

Say a 5 meg file is deleted.

If another file less than 5 megs is added, is it "put" in the hole
left by the
file deletion ?

If a file is deleted, the space is simply marked as being writable.
The free space is reassigned as Windows sees fit and could be used by
another file 5 meges or less
or by a file larger than 5 megs with the rest of the file placed elsewhere.

If your looking for technical info, my guess is it would
vary by brand of software and could be proprietary.
