Defrag in Windows XP Home - graphical overview

Leslie Anne

Hi Participants,

In the Window XP Home's defrag program, is the graphical
representation of the partition from left to right equivalent to
the partition's sectors from the inner ones to the outer ones?

Which files does the defrag program consider not movable (the
"green" files in the graphical representation)?

Problem: In the graphical overview of my hard drive/C partition,
the files that could not be moved (the "green" files) were always
located at the far left. But the last time that I defragged,
these green files were in the middle of the representation!

I'm concerned that something has gone wrong.

I'd appreciate feedback on this.

What exactly is NOT working?

Don't worry about it.

Hi Plato,

As far as I can tell, there is nothing to report as not working.

I've noticed this change and do not understand it, especially since it is a
change in the representation of the so-called immovable files and I have been
assuming up to now that my understanding of the representation was left to
right = inner to outer sectors.

Would appreciate therefore consideration of my questions posed.

Thanks in advance

Hi Rock,

It's certainly nice to know that I don't have to worry about the change of
position of the green files from always being on the far left of the
graphical representation to now being in the middle of the representation.

I would like, however, to have a sound basis for not worrying. So could you
consider the two questions that I posed?

Hoping for an informative response,
Leslie

You know?? Files are not always on the same position of your disk.
They moves everyday.
The one green box you are looking may not the same one yesterday.
Not movable files?? I am not sure.
If you care about it, you can read an article or a book.

Hi Ben,

have already researched as best as I could, but, unfortunately, have not yet
found the information.

Perhaps other participants have answers to my questions or can point out an
article in which this particular information is contained.

Thank you for your response.

Nothing has gone wrong. My green bar is in the middle too. Don't worry about
it.

If it aint broke, dont fix it.

Files don't move by themselves. If you change a file and its size
changes, it may be relocated. Otherwise it stays where it is.

Hi Plato,

I was hoping for feedback concerning my understanding of the graphical
representation, that is whether or not the representation is to be "read"
left to right as showing the placement of files starting from the inner to
the outer sectors.

Okay, Rock. Still, if you have something more to say concerning the
interpretation of the graphical representation in the defrag program, would
be glad to hear it.

Hi Alias,

Thanks for the info. Glad to know I'm not the only one with green bars in
the middle of the graphical overview.

Hi Ken,

And what about the green files?

Hi Bob,

After using the link that you provided, I reread the product documentation
from Microsoft on the defragmentation displays, and I couldn't find anything
in there that should lead me to believe that the position of the colored bars
in horizontal bar graphs provides information about the position of the
files, or rather of cluster groupings, on the volume.

So I guess that neither a left-to right reading nor a right-to left reading
of the horizontal bar graph is gonna give me any information about the
volume.

In particular, this means that, although in former defragmentations the
green files were always at one particular location on the horizontal bar
graph, the change of position of the green files on the horizontal bar graph
does not give me any information about their former or present position on
the volume.

Somebody should let me know If this is not correct.
Thanks for the discussion on this!
