using xp home, sp1. dell desktop purchased 4-2004. my prior experience with
defraging my old win 98se, i always defraged while in safe mode, no
screensaver or power saver enabled. worked fine! should i do same way on xp
system? thank you, len kiesling

Should work, defrag has more access to files in safe mode
as well. Give it a shot, should be no harm.

Run defrag normally.
If it works, don't worry about anything else. If it doesn't work, either
use the Safe Mode method, or find out what specific thing in the
background is causing the problem.

Hi:

Maybe it's easier for you just in the normal mode and turn off the screen
saver and other things, instead of going to the safe mode.

I do that for my system and have no problem at all. By the way, SP 2 is
released and you may wish to update it. Read MS instructions first before
doing it though.

Hope this will help.

i'm reading a lot of problems out there with sp2. do you have link how to
install? & thanks all for the replies! len
