Defining Bookmarks and using them in headings

Hi all,
OK, I am so close to getting this to work, but I'm doing something wrong and
just can't figure out what it is.

There are a couple of items on the title page of a document that I want to
use in my header/footer and I want them to be updated as the data changes in
the title page.

Here are the steps I followed:
1. I created bookmarks by highlighting each item on the title page (for
example the document title) and doing "Insert...Bookmarks...add" and naming
it.

2. I opened the heading, pressed "CTRL, F9" and got the funny brackets.

3. I did "Insert, Field" and tried both Page Ref and Ref fields, picked the
bookmark namea from the list.

The result is either nothing happens or it appears there but doesn't stay.
I know it's got to be something silly I'm missing - please let me know what
it is.
