Defender updates

Windows Defender has been advising that I need to update my system as it has
not been updated for 18 days, However when checking for updates the message
box then says that my system is currently up to date with live updates and
engines.
Could someone please advise a way to get around this, Or a Beta spyware
program to use.
I feel Windows Defender needs more fine tuning to become a worthwhile
program without the hickups
 
In my opinion M$ should forget about antispyware technology. It hasn't
got the knowledge or expertise and it is trying to operate in a
non-monopolistic market.

Controlling Windows and Office packages is one thing but trying to
control another product in which one hasn't got the expperience or the
motivated staff is completely another thing.

WD is crap and it has been a beta product for nearly 1 year now. There
is no sign of this product becoming a Gold Standard in the near future.
