I have installed Defender B2. When I click on "Check for updates" I get a
baloon that
says

"Windows Defender was unable to complete the update: 0x80072efd"

What is the problem?

Steve,

I get this error on every machine on the LAN. They are all able to get
updates.

Windows XP PRO SP2
Just downloaded Defender from MS website.
SBS 2003 PREM ISA 2004 installed.

Like I said, everything else worky fine. Just defender is not updating,
gives error with 0x80072efd.

Thanks

TO clarify, the 0x80072efd error means that the client cannot connect to WU.
This error can be a number of things, but it is not defender specific. Users
who run into this error may also have issues running automatic updates.

Hi dan

It is a svchost.exe update.

You can check it with TCPview from Sysinternals.

I believe a lot of problems now with updates is firewall
problems and blocked svchosts

The problem on a corporate network may be that you are not using Windows
update and have id disabled
([HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer] "NoWindowsUpdate"=dword:00000001"
Anyone know if Microsoft plans on keeping Defender tied to Windows Update or
will there be a manual update method?

I think the issue is that both Update and Defender are doing updates via
svchost.exe. Trying to figure out what rules to setup in the firewall
that allows svchost access to the internet only when Update and Defender
are using it are not obvious at all.
