Defender attempting unauthorised access to Norton

I have a string of alerts in the Norton log (Norton AV 2005) like this:

Event Details:
Time: 06/07/2006 09:07:00
Actor: C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MsMpEng.exe (PID=720)
Target: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exe
Action: Unauthorized access
Reaction: Unauthorized access stopped

(It often plays the same game with AOL's waol.exe as well, on startup. I
presume I can just ignore it and be content that Norton is going about its
job successfully protecting itself - but can anyone please explain why
Defender would be seeking 'unauthorised access' to Norton?)

Apparently Microsoft was not smart enough to seek out one of the many holes
in Norton's "security" and unwittingly targeted one of the few protected
holes. ;-)

Seriously, Denfender generally "plays well with others". That Norton
considers Defender to be a threat is admirable in a bizarre sort of way.
