Default settings to open something - where it looks first

each time when I open Microsoft Word 2003, Or Exel and go to find a file it
seems to always look in "My Documents" seems to be the default setting How do
I change where it looks first or is directed to first?

In Word, Tools>Options, the File Location tab, modify the Documents setting.

In Excel, Tools > Options, the General tab, modify the Default file location.

In Word, go to Tools - Options - File Locations, and click on Documents.
Then browse to the directory you want Word to look in. I imagine that the
process is similar in Excel.
