Default Program Files Directory

I have a workstation w/ 2 hard drives. C/D. I have the Program Files Directory on the D drive for performance. Is it possible to set something in the registry that sets the Default Program Files directory to wherever you want, like a system envoirnment variable? Is this how it works or do most installation programs just tack on Program Files to the windows drive? Thanks in advance.

See tip 3236 in the 'Tips & Tricks' at http://www.jsiinc.com for the registry
entries.
