default internet connection

I have a VPN client setup to access our LAN. When the user is at home and
connecting via VPN over his cable modem, he has access to all network
resources. But, I do not want him to browse the internet through the VPN
connection, only through his ISP. Is this possible?

You can have him change his setup so that he isn't using the remote gateway,
but I'd rethink this - how do you know whether his home network is secured
by a firewall?
