Default DVD Player

Hello all,

I would like to set WinDVD as the default player for DVD movies. In other
words, when I put a DVD movie in the drive and close the tray I want to have
WinDVD automatically start playing that movie.

Does anyone know how to do this in Vista Home Basic?

There are alternatives to Vista that you should be aware of. Have you
considered Ubuntu? That might solve all your problems.

Rick,

Well, it almost works. Under the list of programs to use WinDVD is not
listed and there's no way to force the use of WinDVD because there is no
"Browse" button like you have in WinXP.

Under the Autoplay window the best I can do there is select the very last
option at the bottom "Set Autoplay Defaults In Control Panel", but when I try
using that option all I can do there for DVD movies is select "Ask Me
Everytime" which solves nothing.

This sucks because I have to manually run WinDVD each time I want to watch a
DVD movie. Oh well, such is the limitations of Vista Home Basic I suppose :-(

Maybe you should look into Ubuntu. Looks like you are having lots of
problems with Vista. There are other alternatives you know. I'm just
educating the masses. !

Hi Bill,

I'm not knocking Ubuntu, or Linux for that matter, but if you have
invested heavily in Windows software it is hardly an alternative. How
about "a different operating system that is free, and may work for you",
instead?

Yep, as far as I know I am using the latest version of WinDVD.

Well, you've probably already done this but have you checked WinDVD options
and/or settings to see if you can make it your default DVD player? I seem
to recall, when I used it, on XP, it asked if I wanted to make WinDVD my
default player; you might need to reinstall.

On the AutoPlay option, if you set it to always ask, when the options screen
comes up when you insert a disk, does WinDVD show up in the list there?

All Responders,

Everything is working fine now that I re-installed WinDVD. I think what
happened is I originally had both PowerDVD and WinDVD installed. I
uninstalled PowerDVD but I think it was still being recognized as the default
DVD player. Once I uninstalled and reinstalled WinDVD it became the newly
recognized default player.

Thanks to all of you for responding and helping me get focused on how to
solve this issue :)
