Default browser, IE and SBC

I have heard that if you install SBC DSL, their version of IE will be
considered the default and it's really hard to change it. Why do they
do that?

What is diff about their version of IE?

I've read that the usual method of using Internet Options / Programs /
checkbox-for-default-browser doesn't help you.

I have sbc Yahoo! with DSL. While installing it on this computer, I was able
to choose Internet Explorer as the default browser, but I have the Yahoo!
toolbar and can access the DSL Yahoo! website, no probs. On my old
computer, I didn't realize that I would have a choice, so the SBC Yahoo!
browser is the default. However, it is only one step away from IE as the
preferred browser.

Biggest problem there? SBC or Yahoo! (can't recall which) always wanted me
to sign in, and wouldn't save the password. . .as a security measure, I
suppose.

IE didn't require that. Either way, I was (am) "always on".

Hope this helps. I don't know whom you heard the discouraging word from. I
am happy with my DSL line, too.

When you switch to broadband, try NOT to install their software unless
you really need it to get a connection.

Unless it's something proprietary like AOL, when you sign up with
any ISP, there's no reason to install their special software (or
special software versions). Just continue to use the same
software you've been using using, and just change the addresses
of things like E-mail servers, news servers, etc.

As others have indicated, its not wise to install an ISP's software. You
have to consider built-in trojans and spyware as part of that package.

If your system is capable of system partition backups, you can install their
software. Then, get the details for connection from network properties.
Reinstall the former windows installation from the image file. Finally,
apply those connection properties to your current XP installation. Install
techs usually only know to install the software for cable systems I've found
out. And, that's how I got around using there connection software.
