default applications for a file extension

I am having a problem with opening pdf files. Before I get the
"see the Adobe webpages" responses, I want point out that my IT
group has blown away my profile ( it took months to recover from
that mistake ) and forced me to install the version 6 professional
Acrobat (distinctly inferior to version 5!).

My problem showed up again with with explorer lockups which last
up to 20 minutes. During this time, the task manager shows no
process starting with acrobat. I can even open acrobat and open,
change and delete the file from the application, while the explorer
is still cranking. If I create a new extension (say ddd) I can
rename all my frequently used pdfs to ddd files and the problem
is non existent.

I have looked at the folder options and everything looks fine
for the .pdf extension. If I look in the registry the .pdf is
defined as content application/pdf. When I look in the registry
there is an exhaustive hodgepodge of adobe records for almost
everything under the sun. I don't know what "application/pdf"
content executes.

Is there a means of finding what application will process an
arbitrary xxx.pdf?? Surely this must be part of a development
cycle for applications.

Thanks. I have used the ftype and associate. The show that the .ddd
type extensions are processed identically. However, I have the 20
minute lockups of explorer with the .pdf and a immediate response with
my new .ddd extension.

I guess I have a work around and a mystery.

Thanks again
