Sometimes all software in a class have the same features, but one is still
better than the rest. DeepBurner is arguably as good as any. Try it. It
won't bite you, and you may even prefer whatever you are using.

despite that it gets praised right into heaven it lacks VCD/SVCD
burning support (cfr FAQ) .. although the welcome page states :

"Every possible CD/DVD burning format is supported
DeepBurner supports all certified formats for burning CDs/DVDs thus
allowing you to create audio, video, data, archive, etc., CDs and DVDs
with just one program. Everything is included.
"
a bit "misleading" (or should I say "simplistic"?) don't you think ?

and if you read the license agreement you find:

(a) Freeware. You may use the SOFTWARE without charge. ASTONSOFT may place
advertisements in evaluation copies. ASTONSOFT will not monitor the content
of your use (e.g., sites selected or files used).

(suddenly not so free, eh?)

Nor can it write to DVD+R discs. I tried DeepBurner thinking it would work
based on the same info you posted above, yet when trying to burn some Taiyo
Yuden DVD+Rs, I kept getting an error message. Upon searching through the
DB forum, sure enough, many reported the same problem with other burners
and other DVD+R media, and it was confirmed by a moderator that indeed it
was the case and that the user could do nothing to fix it:

Major issue for me. I can't confirm that DVD-R works because I don't
generally use that medium (my LiteOn allows bitsetting with DVD+R, a big
PLUS if you ask me.......pun intended.)

Not really. Name one major retail chain in the US for for instance that
actually sells or rents VCD/SVCD.

VCD/SVCD is something for people to basically play with, but I don't
see where the format is acually used for anything.

irrelevant - VCD and SVCD are formats which home users can use to burn
films onto one CD - rather than a DVD.

You are simply showing your ignorance here.

Whether or not VCD/SVCD is used COMMERCIALLY is not the point.

Many people use VCD/SVCD that simply cannot afford a DVD writer or haven't
yet gotten one.

A software package that "claims" to support ALL formats........yet doesn't
is just as bad as MS claiming their products are secure!

Another poster reported Deep Burner won't/can't write to DVD+R media. WTF!

The truth is out there. You just have to look in the right places and ask
the right questions.

huh ? what's the relevance of that ?

you mean that those hords/masses of people just wanting to burn their
digipicts on a CD (just to name one group) be it only for convenience
are well served with something like "deepburner" ?

you must be kidding !

check the video/vcd/svcd et al discussion groups maybe you'll get on
top of reality :)

I don't particually like Deep Burner either but that's because
it doesn't seem to support long Unix/Linux/BSD type filenames.

I'm not going to knock it because it doesn't support a format
[VCD/SVCD] that only seems to used by the Windows Warez crowd.

Creating a VCD/SVCD CD with a bunch of family photos is warez? That's
what I do with those formats. . . Your definition of warez must differ
from mine. . . ;)

Think you are jumping the gun a little here - I do not feel the need
to justify what I use VCD or even SVCD for, or even whether I use them
at all - in fact, I do not use them - but I am aware that some people
do.

If they were useless, or only for people who use warez, then why do
respectable CD writing software people build in the capacity to use
these formats ?

My comments said little about me at all - your speak volumes if you !

Come on Susan. You know as well as I do what these guys are about,
and it isn't about creating a VCD/SVCD CD with a bunch of family
photos.

I see you didn't answer my post - how dare you make assumptions about
me, because I know about different formats - you are on shaky ground
and you know it !

Oh please. Go into any of the Playstation 2 or Xbox newsgroups and you and
your friends will be posting questions about how to copy PS2 and Xbox games
for "backup" purposes.....

Oh please. Go into any of the Playstation 2 or Xbox newsgroups and you and
your friends will be posting questions about how to copy PS2 and Xbox games
for "backup" purposes.....

I don't own a playstation 2, or an X-box - the kids have a playstation
1, with a dance mat - bought and paid for. I knew what people use
VCD/SVCD for - didn't realise that this format would be used for
copying games - if I wanted to copy a game, I would use Clone CD - I
have seen that before - but would not have thought of using VCD or
SVCD for that purpose.

I *do* have a DVD burner - have used it to back up my hard drive, and
to copy one DVD box set - Lord of the Rings - it cost me a lot of
money and I wanted a backup as the kids sticky fingers tend to ruin
discs. - I know this is illegal - but I feel it is morally OK - you
may disagree.

Now you know a little more about me, why don't you resist the
temptation to lump me into categories which suit your argument.

Alternatively, go find my name, email address or IP number associated
with any posts in these newsgroups - then you can include me in your
generalisation.

You see - you may be right about what many people use these formats
for - but not me - and you have accused me personally of doing this -
and you are wrong.

I could respond to you in kind, lump you into a group of net police
for example - but I don't do that - this group is for freeware issues
-not copying software or games - and as you have seen from myself and
Susan, some use these formats for free or legal purposes.

Still sure you are right about me ?

Hey, Allistair.

Nice effort, but is he really worth it?

Chris,

The first post that even mentioned VCD/SVCD in this thread did so with
emphasis, as I read it, on the fact that the software's description was
misleading because DeepBurner claims to be able to do ALL CD / DVD formats.
The post made no mention of the importance, ubiquity, or legality of the
format. Yet your response to the post (your first post in the thread)
dismissed the less than truthful quote from the software's website by
stating that the description was honest because it would be difficult if
not impossible to " name one major retail chain in the US for for instance
that actually sells or rents VCD/SVCD" and that "VCD/SVCD is something for
people to basically play with, but I don't see where the format is acually
used for anything."

Your basis for deeming the description honest was as off-base and illogical
as your subsequent ramblings and accusations have been.

You lose because you make no sense.
