Dead USB Ports in Windows XP SP2

I have a new IBM T42p 2379 laptop with two built-in USB 2.0 ports.
Initially, the ports did indeed work but after I used the microsoft web site
to bring the OS up to date with all of the upgrades and patches to include
SP2 the ports stopped working. Both USB ports still have power and I have
verified that the devices I want to use indeed are still operational - just
not on this system. IBM tech support told me if I send it in to them they
will simply put it back to SP1. I do not know which update killed the ports
but most of them look like security updates and the write ups for the patches
didn't say anything about the USBs that I could find.

I went into the device manager and uninstalled all of the USB devices and
then had the systm reinstall them all but this did not help. Anyone have any
worthwhile ideas for me to try - thanks in advance... norm
