I have a copy of Vista Ultimate edition that I installed on my main computer,
however it turns out that a couple programs that I use regularly are having
some problems with Vista.

Having said that I'd like to (for now) go back to XP on my main machine and
install Vista on my backup box. I don't want to try to activate it on my
backup box and get it flagged right away. I don't want any problems or screw
up my ~300 dollar license.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards.

Install it on the new PC and use telephone activation to activate the new
copy.

That won't put any sort of "damper" on my license status with Microsoft?

It should be no problem.
The one time I called Microsoft I was surprised how nice they were.
(No joke)

Absolutely not. The folks at Microsoft are both understanding and willing
to help you in a situation like this. Now, if you claim you've moved the
same copy between eight or ten PCs ... :-)
