De-fragging Harddisk Vs Wear?

I defrag my harddisk everyday for 30mins. (The harddisk is
actually continuously working hard for the full 30
minutes.) I wanted to know if I'm doing more damage to the
harddisk by defragging like this everyday or should I
defrag maybe once a week or once a month? I mean if I don't
defrag, I estimate the harddisk only works hard (e.g. hdd
needle moving wildly back and forth) for maybe a couple
mins maximum at a time, allowing the hdd some cooling and
rest. This is versus the 30mins daily that the hdd is
doing. A harddisk working continuously for a full 30mins or
more would seem to create a lot of heat...and heat coupled
with the needle's wild back&forth movement would seem very
bad for the wear of hdd.
What do you think?

For the normal user once in 3 to 6 months is probably sufficient.

If Disk Defragmenter Analysis suggests a defrag, then you definitely need to
defrag.
If it says do it "every day", then that is because your harddrive is heavily
fragmented "every day". However, having to defrag this often usually
indicates a much gretaer problem. You should be concerned...
you might want to try performing a clean install of the OS, but I fear that
you should be shopping for a new hard drive.
