I need to populate a Gigabyte GA-k8N Pro or GA-K8VNXP mobo with Athlon
64 3200 with 1.5GB or 2GB of memory. With double-sided DDR400 memory,
it appears that I can only use 2/3 of the memory slots in either of
the mobos. In its memory notes the Kingston site states that both its
DDR333 and DDR400 sticks are double-sided, but apparently the 2/3 rule
only applies to the the DDR400 sticks. Thus, without breaking the
bank, the only cost feasible thing (the 1GB DDR400 is $560 vs $205) is
to use the DDR333 in the boards with an Athlon 64 3200. How big a
performance hit is that going to be?
Alternative is if someone definitely knows of alternative name brand
DDR400 memory that will allow me to use 3 512MB modules. Presumably
they need to be single-sided. I checked Crucial and Corsair modules
at a variety of sites but could not determine whether they are double
or single sided.
