DCPROMO on an NT 4.0 Domain

Mr E

Scenario:

I have an NT 4.0 domain with a PDC and a BDC
I built an W2K server
If I run DCPROMO on the W2K server, will it
demote the PDC to a BDC and create an
Active Directory on the W2K server populated with the SAM from the PDC?
I would prefer to do this over doing an in-place W2K upgrade directly to the PDC.

Any thoughts or comments?

Also if you can point me to any KB articles that support or not support my concept, that would be nice.

Thanks,
Mr E

The WIN2k Server will act as the PDC in this paritcular mode (Mixed Mode) ..
I have a simular question, but I got some of my answers here. Hopefully this
will help you too.

As a follow up, not that the upgrade is all over.

I did an in-place upgrade of the PDC to a W2K server.
W2K recognized that it was the PDC and automatically
installed A/D and populated it with all my SAM stuffage
from NT. I have since build a "pristine" W2K server
and DCPROMO'd it, moved the FSMO stuff to it
and about ready to demote the original PDC before
taking it off-line. I end up with the migrated and clean
domain.

The biggest problem I had during upgrade was that
DNS was all jacked up because my PDC was configured
to use another domains DNS. When I upgraded the PDC
it of course installed its own DNS and set it up with the
original parameters. It took 45 minutes to get from C-A-L
to the desktop. Eventually I got the DNS MMC
fired up and corrected the setting. So I guess the lesson
learned is that you need to pre-configure DNS to itself
before doing an inplace upgrade.
