DCPROMO Does Not Work Across a VPN

G

Guest

Windows Server 2000. I am trying to prepare a server to move to another
location. We have a dedicated VPN to the other location. I have joined the
server to the remote domain without a problem. However, when I try to use
DCPROMO to make the server an additional domain server on the domain, I get
the message:

The domain "gnmsc.local" is not an Active Directory domain, or an Active
Directory domain controller for the domain could not be contacted.

I have another controller on the domain which IS an AD controller for the
domain. I understand that this message may be the result of the fact that I
am trying to connect to the domain controller through the VPN. How may I
make this work? Thanks for the help and God bless.

The domain "gnmsc.local" is not an Active Directory domain, or an Active
Directory domain controller for the domain could not be contacted.

This message is usually associated with DNS. Is the server you are promoting
pointed to the DNS server for your AD domain for DNS resolution?

Yes. I ran the DNS admin tool and connected to the DNS on the domain I am
trying to DCPROMO to. Any other suggestions. Thanks for any more help you
may provide. God bless.

I looked at the link. Adjusted my DNS address to look at the existing server
at the remote location and DCPromo then worked. Thanks.
