DCOM

An Error record in the System section of my Event Viewer contains the
following:
Event ID10010
User NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
"The server {.....} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout"
(where {.....} contains a long string of alpha-numeric characters).

What is DCOM?
Do I need it?
If not, how do I disable it?

Thanks,
Paul

Thanks for the reply, although I'm still confused. I use Windows Update
quite frequently. I did so yesterday when I got the error, but there were no
critical updates to install. There was only one update offered
(non-critical), which I did not install as it said it was only needed when
..NET applications were in use and I don't use these. Is this relevant?
Indeed, is there some sort of service running that does involve .NET and
that I don't know about?

What always worries me is that Microsoft has a nasty habit of enabling all
sorts of things by default, even when they are rarely needed. If anyone has
any advice it will be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Paul
