DCOM error when attempting to run system information utility - rep

G

Guest

I posted this in general discussion a few days ago, but got no response so I
figure it was the wrong conference. If this isn't the right one either
please let me know because I need to solve this problem.

I am unable to run system information (msinfo32.exe) in my xp pro sp2 set
up. The following error occurs in the system event viewer.

The server {73E709EA-5D93-4B2E-BBB0-99B7938DA9E4} did not register with DCOM
within the required timeout.

How can I fix this?

Thanks

I checked the system event viewer and the following message is displayed when
I run msinfo32.exe

The machine-default permission settings do not grant Local Activation
permission for the COM Server application with CLSID
{73E709EA-5D93-4B2E-BBB0-99B7938DA9E4}
to the user NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE SID (S-1-5-20).

This is the Microsoft WMI Provider Subsystem Host
when I go to properties
Launch and Activation says use default
Access Permissions says use default
Configure Parameters says custom

I change the first 2 to custom, make sure all the boxes are checked, hit
apply and ok.
When I go back to properties the 1st 2 are back to use default. The
settings I have entered have disappeared.
Where is the default COM Security page that this references?

That DCOM error is related to app_filter its part of the nvidia firewall you

expand component services-computers-my computer-DCOM Config,
right click on app_filter select properties, on the security tab select
customize for launch and activation permissions
and hit the edit button to open the launch permissions page, click the add
button to open the user and group selection page,
click advanced to open the select user or group page, click the find now
button then scroll down through the list of users

click ok again to return to the launch permissions page, now you should see
SERVICE in the list of users and groups for

Thanks for staying with me on this

I read the references.
I have a I have an NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5600 display adapter, but there is no
app_filter listed and I am not sure it is significant

Am still getting this message.

Event 10016
The machine-default permission settings do not grant Local Activation
permission for the COM Server application with CLSID
{73E709EA-5D93-4B2E-BBB0-99B7938DA9E4}
to the user NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE SID (S-1-5-20). This security
permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.

I added SERVICE to the users of the WMI module and also to the two .clb's in
Windows\registration but no change.
I can't find anything like NT AUTHORITY so maybe SERVICE wasn't the right
addition.
