DCdiag Test Error & Client Registrations

T

Tomas Hawwk

Greetings All!

I have two problems with my current test network. Here's a brief description
of my environment:

One Windows 2000 Server - AD and DNS - Hostname=HAVOK
Two Windows NT 4.0 Servers - Both were BDC
Two Windows 2000 Professional Clients

The 2K Server HAVOK, was a NT4.0 PDC that I upgraded to 2K Server. During
the upgrade, I installed DNS and AD.

Everything "SEEMS" to be working correctly, and yet I receive an error when
I run the utility DCDIAG. I've included the output of DCDIAG which
demonstrates the error below. In addition, I also ran "netdiag /v /test:dns"
and included that output as well. I can logon with any/all of my user
accounts on all servers and clients. I can ping any and all IP addresses and
Hostnames.

The other problem is that my clients and other two servers do not show up in
DNS. As a result, I do not get good results with NSLOOKUP when I attempt to
query the other two servers and clients. The only system that has an entry
in DNS is the 2K AD/DNS Server HAVOK.

Any ideas or suggestion are appreciated. Also, I will post all additional
requested information about my environment. Thanks much!

Sincerely,
Tomas Hawwk

If your clients are not registering, that could be due to a couple factors:
1. Client Primary DNS Suffix is not set to the AD domain name.
2. Updates not set to Yes on both your AD zone name and the reverse zone.
3. If using NT4 or W9x and not using DHCP, they cannot register.
4. If using NT4 or W9x clients, and using DHCP, the option to update clients
that cannot register is not checked.

Can you post an unedited ipconfig /all of your DC and one of your clients
please? That'll give us a headstart in diagnosing this.
