DBX's tp EML's

I tried that for a while but didn't have any luck. (Though that doesn't mean
it can't be done-just means I gave up). I ended up dragging a bunch of
message headers right out of Outlook Express into a folder, where each
became a .eml file. Then I dragged those .eml files into the message header
section on Win Mail. Surprisingly, it worked.

There is no conversion tool. You can buy a 3rd party utility to extract the
contents of a DBX file as EML files, but if you have the DBX file in Outlook
Express (and it has not become corrupted), just open it, select all the
messages and drag/drop them into a folder you create using Explorer (where
they will be saved as EML files). Then save it to some type of media (USB
stick, CD, etc.).

For extraction tools, see the ones at www.oehelp.com called DBXtract and
DBXpress. Both are well worth the investment.

The big problem here is not just to find a workaround (manual conversion)
and I hope Microsoft will take heed. There is a good reason for
the change to the .EML format that we will all benifit from.

The Migration wizard needs to convert the Dbx files (for e-mail) to
individual .EML's and along with e-mail server setting's
newsgroup server settings, subscribed newsgroup's and newsgroup lists

The Migration wizard has to be capable of this function, especially since
the upgrade path from 32 to 64 bit is going to require alot
of people to do a clean install even if they keep the same pc they have
32bit XP on now.

Other people will buy a new Computer with Vista preinstalled and need their
files transfered from their old XP computer regardless
of wether they are are going with the 32 bit or the 64 bit os choice.

Microsoft has to realize that the value of the migration wizard is only
about 30% "My Documents, My Pictures, My Music and Favorites - The other 70%
is My E-Mail!.

Unfortunatley this is the first OS since window for workgroups (3.11) that I
have not been a regular Beta Tester for, and it's much harder from this side
of the fence to get this opinion passed on to people that will consider it
and possibly implement it. let alone see the regular newsgroups to see if
it's already being disscussed or possibly corrected in future builds.

File | Import | Messages should work now as it does the same for importing
from other message stores in OE.

However, they may not have that working yet. It appears clear that they
don't plan to implement NG importing, as far as I know.

And you can go backwards also to reincorporate the messages into OE from
WinMail.

Winmail does not import .DBX files brought from another computer nor does
the migration wizard collect them from an xp machine. and your right it may
just be a case of it not yet working. One of the import options in Winmail
is "Newsgroup Settings" the same as in OE6 but as it stands, importing
newsgroup server settings is not enough, you should not have re-download the
list and re-subscribe to all your groups.

I don't think you are going to get the newsserver information imported over.
