Dbase IV Import

When trying to import a Dbase IV file I get the following
error:
Microsoft Jet database engine could not find the
object. . .

Knowledgebase support says to rename to MsDOS 8.3 format
(eight charaters.ext). When I do that I get the
following error:
External Table is not in the expected format.

Column names have to "play nice" too.
e.g.
No weird characters
No spaces
10 characters or less for the name
