db won't open on second machine

Hi -
I have a client with a pretty basic database on their Windows Storage Server
2003. When someone is on one workstation with the db open, it can not be
opened on another machine. You can doubleclick on the shortcut or the
database and nothing happens. No messages, nothing. The software is Access
2003, the db format is Access 2000. Their network support person feels he
has the permissions set up correctly, but I can't verify that. Any thoughts
would be hugely appreciated!

Have you split your database into a front end and a backend, and then created
a frontend for each possible user? If not, Access freezes when more than one
user tries to access the data through a single point.

I am having the same problem and I'm sure I can clarify for the original poster.

I have a split Access Database and still have this problem. For argument sake, call them FrontEnd.mdb and BackEnd.mdb.

When a user has FrontEnd.mdb open, I can't open either FrontEnd.mdb and BackEnd.mdb. This all used to work dandy until I upgraded from Win2K pro to WinXP.

Basically, if there is an LDB file open for ANY access database, I am unable to open it on my XP machine. Once that LDB file disappears (I.e. all other users exit), I can open it just fine.

What permissions do you have on the folder where the database files exist?
(You need at least Read, Write and eXecute, and usually Delete as well).

Is it possible that your Access is set to open exclusively? (Look on the
Advanced tab under Tools | Options)

I have modify permissions on this folder and the files are set to "shared".

A little further information...I have a user on Windows 2000 pro who can open
these mdb's when someone else has it open. I am the only person who can't
open them and this only started when I changed my OS to Windows XP Pro.

That being said, it may have been coincidental that I switched to XP and this
started happening, but the fact that it still works as intended for my users
on 2000 Pro leads me to believe otherwise!

Any help or assistance that can be offered is greatly appreciated.

Any other folks out there with suggestions on ways to resolve this headache?

I just posted a similar question. We are all on XP running Access 2003.
Once someone has it open the only way to open the databse is to open Access
and then select the file. Clicking directly through Windows explorer does
nothing. Does anyone know how to fix this????
