DB Power AMP change!

From Spoon's (the program's author) forum page.

It is highly unfortunate, as this is an exceptional suite of
(previously) free...(well, it still can be without ubiquitos mp3s) sound
packages that I use daily.

$9 is nothing nowadays, nearly the cost of a fast food burger. BUT it
still puts a whole different spin on a generous and well working
program.

Enough ranting from me, read on:
--

It had to happen some time, it has happened now - the patent holders for
mp3 have contacted me demanding huge sums of money. To counter this:

dBpowerAMP Music Converter R11 will be pulled out from beta early (next
8 weeks), it will be combined with Aux Input and File Selector (these
should not add much to the install size, maybe 700KB), it will have the
mp3 encoder functioning off the Power Pack (extended trial to 60 days),
that is after 60 days if not registered (new price will be $9) the mp3
encoder will stop working. Almost all money collected will go to the
patent holders.

Sveta Portable Audio will move onto its own registration (away from the
power pack), obviously previous Power Pack owners will get Sveta.

Not too happy about this one, but having 'multi-billion dollar'
companies on the war path...it is not too plesant.

Yeah, Fraunhoffer is quite aggressive with pursuing their patent monies,
and I suppose they certainly have a right and all. Though one does
wonder that when something becomes so generic and widespread when does
it become public domain?

Legally, never, I know.

But since mp3's are everywhere it will be impossible for them to make
EVERYONE pay royalties. In fact only a minority will be pressed to do
so, so it's quite unfair. Still, they go after the well known programs
with wide distribution so that does put a dent in the illegal use I
suppose.

There are several different free codecs to use and I don't understand why
people don't use them. By using MP3 you give a large corp a strangle hold
situation. Flac, Monkeys Audio, both are good. My personal favourite is Ogg
Vorbis. There are portable players that you can buy and use. With over 2500
files on my drive not one is an MP3. I guess it's like the old VHS vs Beta
war and the best didn't actually win in that case either(my opinion). I
don't use Music converter often but it is good and useful.

Second that. Ogg-Vorbis is my favorite, too. Smaller files - same (or
better) quality.
