Daughter forgot Administrator Password!!!!

PJ

Hi,

I'm hoping someone can actually help me here.

My daughter is 8, and unbeknowns to me has set up user accounts, which I was
fine with - then she set the password on her 'administrator' account, and it
has locked us out. She can't remember what she typed!!!!

Can anyone help me?

I need to reset the permissions, and I have no way I can do this as a
limited user when I switch to ours. I can't even do a system restore for
this reason!

Go to google and search for "windows xp local system administrator password
reset disk" without the quotes. If you care not to do that, you can install
XP again choosing the R "Repair" option.

Rick - maybe you can expand on this subject - an amateur pro set up my
computer, and I have administrator, adminstrator2, and administrator3, as
well as All Users, Default User, and [myname].

One of the mvp's got on me about being so retentive, but I am and I own it.
I am the only user of this non-network desktop, and don't want to see
extraneous garbage. When I go network, it will be after hitting Lotto, and I
will have an IT specialist to take care of these things for me, but for now
I am frustrated.

Any advice will be gratefully appreciated.

In general, you should have an account for every user, that is a standard
user account, and one administrator account. For good practice, never log
on with an admin account.
also, do mnot remove Windows built in accounts.
I wrote a manual about this once, if you send me your e-mail address I will
send you a copy.

Repair does not cut it, it is merely fixing screwed installations )in-place
repair). side by side install can do it, damn lots of work.

What did you want to expand upon? The use of admin accounts?

Hi,

It can be reset from any other admin account (and if hers is the only
one, then what were you thinking?). See also:

Sorry if I was unclear. Yes, I have the annoyance book and it seems to be
leading me to set up extraneous accounts. I am me, I am alone, and I don't
need extra accounts. If I am forced to have a personal and an administrator,
thats fine. There is so much clutter associated with XP! Any help would be
gratefully appreciated.

Hi,

Administrator and All Users are system accounts and need to be left alone.
You should simply need to set up the one personal account. Some OEM
installations also have a "default" user account, and this simply is a
template used in the creation of additional user accounts. The first is a
"fallback" account, not meant for day to day use but rather for purposes
that its name implies. The All Users is also basically what its name
implies, it hold settings, etc. that apply to all user accounts on the
system. In a single user system this seems sort of redundant, but most are
not single user systems. Better to plan for multiple users than to require
different configurations for single vs. multiple user systems (if you think
it's cluttered now, compare that to have to reconfigure a system that was
set up as a single user and now wants to have multiple).
