Date formmatting a bit like accountancy please

I love Excel. I love the clarity and depth it can give to data. I love the
formatting available - but there is one thing I'd really like to be able to
see - and that's column formatting for long dates so that the days all line
up, the months all line up and the years all line up - the only way I can do
it is to place the three parts of the date in separate columns and hide the
column with the date - and inserting a couple of blank columns. It's fiddly
when I reckon it would be neat to enable this to be done automatically.

Or, you could format the column that contains the date in a monospace
font. Seems to me that would be a lot easier.
