Date formatting inconsistent

I am trying to format a date such as 02-Aug-1963, however when I change the
year to 1863, the format switches to 8/2/1863. I've used Custom Formatting,
but the problem persists.
 
Excel does not recognize dates before 1900 as dates
it sees your 8/2/1863 as text
