Date Format

Had to re install XP and now the date appears in American
format in some applications even though the regional
setting is set to UK. If I try and customise UK settings
get an error saying I an using an illegal character!!
Have installed service pack 1a to no avail.
 
Which applications is it appearing that way in?

In Regional and Language Options, your "Standards and Formats" are set to UK
in there, correct? What character are you trying to use?
