Date Display In Cell Not Working

Greetings,

I am trying to combine text from one cell with a date in another cell
into a third cell. The first cell (A1), has one of four possible
entries controlled by a validation dropdown. The second cell (B1), is
a date.

I tried '=A1& &B1'. I was looking for '(Text in A1) 01/2005'.
Instead I got '(text in A1) 38371'.

Anyone have any ideas as to how this is done?

=A1 & " " & Text(B1,"mm/yyyy")

would include a space
