date and time not retained

I have an Xp home system. and when i reboot the time and
date reverts to 1997

any clues are welcome

Bios is unable to keep time on the motherboard between boots. Replace the
motherboard battery. Hopefully, this isn't one of those boards that drains
the battery prematurely.
