Database 256 megs

I noticed similar in the Beta's and RC's--each new "peak" in size resulted
in an apparently permanent large size--until the next peak.
The problem seems to have gone away in RTM, and the size of the mail
database is now dynamic as it should be.

My Database is 256 megs I have compacted deleted read messages and bodies
and headers but its still 256.
What can I try?
I don't want to reset all my ng's and just have to download all the crap
over again.
Ideas?

That's normal. Just let it be. It will get even bigger.

There is now just one database file and all the messages are listed there (the messages are not stored in the file) and have fields extrapolated from them. It can get over a terabyte if you want. <G>

I use Windows mail only as a newsgroup reader. The same set of newsgroups
in XP is 1.7 MB in size and the same set of newsgroups in Windows Mail is 63

I don't know what you mean by the same set of newsgroups. For newsgroups it
will depend upon the number of headers downloaded as well as messages. Also
the database in XP is completely different from Vista and also the messages
are not in the database files, so you can't make a comparison of much value.

That appears to be what the solution is now for Windows Mail issues.

MVPs such as yourself and others are now telling the users to use non-MS
products for NNTP and mail. Doesn't say much for Microsoft when its MVPs
are recommending other products rather than those from MS.

steve

K

I use Windows Mail for a NNTP client and I recommend it's use for text
newsgroups. That doesn't mean it does everything for everybody. I also use
Forte Agent for a NNTP client for binary newsgroups. Use the tool that fits
the job and the user.

Hi Dilly: It sounds like something other than the mail app is to blame
here. Have you tried disabling all other programs that may be "touching"
your mail, such as antivirus program, spam programs, even the "Junk" mail
filter in Windows Mail can be the source, plus not having enough RAM for
Vista. Although it is supposed to run with less, I really think trying to
use less than 1.5-2 GB of RAM is not productive.

You might also want to try using "Windows Mail Live Desktop beta" for your
newsgroups and see if that helps. But "slow" is a relative term. What
exactly do you mean by it being slow? In what way? Compared to what? What
have you tried to fix it? Then we might be able to better help.

Enjoy the snow.

Jim,

She said the size of her database was 250 megabytes. That is nothing for
the size of that file. I tested it up to over 4 gigabytes in the beta.

Performance sucks because of the way they have the database laid out.

I deleted the Pats NG. It is stuck at 270 megs! I deleted headers I deleted message bodies I did it again and again and again

I even deleted the Pats ng file in the store folder.

I know it's not the answer you want Dilly, but all I can say is wait until
the final RTM program is available. There are some significant changes in
the Mail storage capabilities that "should" resolve any problems you are now
having. It's only a few days now until release and the "beta" testing is
over. Good luck.

Glad you found a solution that works for you and I'm ready for warmer
weather and bring on the "boys of summer." Will probably be in Boston
around August since my kid sister is having her 70th birthday so may get to
Fenway again. It's been more than 50 years since I last walked over the
bridge from Kenmore Sq. to the park. Back then we were always hoping for a
series between the Boston Red Sox and the Boston Braves (who used to play at
what is now B.U. Field).

Enjoy the upcoming spring practice. <G>

Did you compact the database after all the deletions? You have to compact it to reduce the size.

Its too late now, since you deleted the files, but in the future you can compaction by changing the number of closings of WinMail to 1 under Tools | Options | Advanced | Maintenance.

Hey Jim!!!
Ok
For months my database has been about 50 megs. When it goes up to 70 or more I bog down.
Like When switching Ng's it hangs etc. So I delete all headers and messages. Database goes back to about 50 megs and all is right with the world.

LOL
You will love this
Last week I decided to check out the New England Patriots NG on my comcast server.
It downloaded over 4 thousand headers! Poof my data base is now 270 megs :(
I deleted headers I deleted message bodies I did it again and again and again I did a catch up on every NG I even reset all and then did a catch up on all.
I deleted the Pats NG. It is stuck at 270 megs! I deleted headers I deleted message bodies I did it again and again and again
THIS IS A BUG
I even deleted the Pats ng file in the store folder.

No we should not expect this. No I wont get used to it. No I will not use another reader.
We are running the Beta to find problems before the release.
I found one..................

people will never forget how you made them feel.

That's normal. Just let it be. It will get even bigger.

There is now just one database file and all the messages are listed there
(the messages are not stored in the file) and have fields extrapolated from
them. It can get over a terabyte if you want. <G>

OK
My Database is 256 megs I have compacted deleted read messages and bodies
and headers but its still 256.
What can I try?
I don't want to reset all my ng's and just have to download all the crap
over again.
Ideas?
Jim?
Steve?
