Data Validation references

Hi,
I have a list of simple text items in [X1:X10]that I would
like to see in menu drop downs in cells A1 to A1000. When
I drag A1 (my first manually entered Data Validation
formatted cell) down to copy or copy A1 to paste special,
I loose 1 value from X1:X10 for each cell in [A] until it
is all gone and A11 is blank.
Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Is it possible that you entered the Source of the data
validation range as =X1:X10. If so try:
=$X$1:$X$10
