What annoys me about Vista is that it takes ages to delete a small file or
even transferring data from a CD or DVD to the hardrive. over the network
transfers are slower than XP also

Why the delays

It has more built in protection systems. Turn off User Account Control in
Control Panel/Users Accounts. But only if you are the only user of course or
trust everyone else?

User Account Control has been turned off

Look for updated drivers, especially those for the Hard Drive. And of course
BIOS updates.

Hard drive updates? never heard of them

All hardware has software drivers for the system to read and use. Vista
often need updated drivers because it works differently to XP

There is never a hard drive driver update

Clayton, this is a known problem for many users.
Windows Explorer is pitiful.

No real cure for it, yet. What I and some other have done
is use a third party file manager. There will be users who suggest
all sorts of lame ideas, and for the most part none of them solve
the problem. Some users will even try to convince you there isn't
a problem and it's either your imagination or just your machine.
Microsoft will have to fix Windows Explorer.
Until then, try one of the below file managers.

Directory Opus 9

Total Commander

xplorer²

Thanks, I'll have a play around, lets hope all this and others are fix in
SP-1 if not, I'm back to XP

There is a fix for this problem:

Hotfix Windows6.0-KB931770-x86

The fix is not available to public. Yopu need to contact Microsft for it or
search the net...

Thanks, that's a start I suppose

It *is* your machine. Not everyone has this problem. I certainly
don't.

It's my *machines*- plural, as in three. Plus, this OP and many other
users who have commented on this in these Vista forums.

I have plural machines also - 2. No problems copying/deleting files.
It's a little bit slower doing network copies than OS X (the only system
I can compare to since I dual boot with it) but Vista is not "seriously
broken".

I'm not denying you have a problem. Just pointing out that it is *not*
universal. Clearly there is something going wrong on some machines.
