data recovery-NTFS

Out of nowhere I can't access one of my logical NTFS drives in an extended
partition. Actually Windows Explorer will list one measly file (of about
15,000) and no folders. The files and folders are still in there per defrag
analysis, Partition Manager, etc; various data recovery tools whiz right
through it and find all of the files. It seems there shold be some way
within Win2000/Microsoft for me to recover the files without spending the $50
or so for the 3rd-party program. I thought the mirrored MFT was suppose to
provide some assistance here...... Anybody know anything that could help me?
btw, my three other logical drives spread over two physical disks are O.K.
Also I did nothing preliminary to the problem -- just turned on the computer
one morning and didn't have my F: drive.

Thanks.

Free eh?

Data Recovery Tools:

I like the third one down I think??? The one for hard drives etc but not for
removable media... Works like a champ... And it's free... The file system
you have seems to have burped or the drive's integrity is at stake. Recover,
backup, diagnose the trouble with the drive, replace or warranty it, and
continue is my advice...
