Data Recovery from Damaged HD

I have an old IBM Deskstar HD that I was using as a backup to my system
drive. Unfortunately, it had some data on it (pics and software
receipts) that is not duplicated elsewhere. The drive has failed-
making a grinding noise when I try to access it. So far I have tried
changing IDE cables and changing the IDE connection on the motherboard.
Right now the drive is vacuum sealed and is in the freezer- hopefully
it will be able to spin up when cold long enough to recover the data. I
don't have much confidence that this will work. A data recovery company
wants $500- providing they don't have to send out the drive to have it
disassembled. Anyone know of any options I can try that I haven't
already covered?

Thanks,
Fitz

sounds silly but I would hold the drive in my hand while I boot to dos
(use rubber glove to keep from getting shocked)

maybe try it upside down, on its sides...on its ends..you have a
physical problem
in the drive...

i would see if there is any position that takes the grinding noise
out..or makes it less...

I would also put a good drive on the cable just to verify that cable
and cmos setting is valid to even read a drive
