Data locked up

I am in the middle of creating an index using excel, I'm about halfway through, and suddenly can't add page numbers - it eithermoves to the row number instead of inserting in the cell or won't put it in. I can't edit existing page numbers either.

not really sure what you mean with 'inserting page numbers'?. What are
you doing exactly?
 
I am writing an index for a book. I have two columns, one with topic title and the other with page numbers. I can edit the test in the title column, but can't enter or change page numbers in the second column. I must have changed something in the formatting but don't know what or how to change it back.

what kind of error do you receive?
- have you protected your worksheet? (Tools - Protection)
