Data File Not Closed Properly

J

Jan Groshan

This has probably been answered numerous times, but it's a new one for me. I
am using Outlook 2007. Just about every time I open it, I get a "Data file
did not close properly....blah blah blah" message. I have no idea what I'm
doing that keeps the data file from properly closing. Even if I've left
Outlook open with using it for a period of time, I still get the error. What
causes the problem, and what can I do about it ?

Some other program that accesses your OST file is probably involved,
Blackberry Desktop Manager being one example, and Google Desktop being
another. Also, I've seen people stop getting that message by doing a File >
Exit from Outlook before shutting down their computers, as opposed to
leaving it open or just clicking the X in the corner.

I do have Google Desktop loaded. I'll give your File/Exit suggestion a try.

Google Groups is an excellent search. If you're sure it has been asked,
take ten seconds and look.

The problem's causes are discussed here:

Thanks Brian. I clicked on your second link and found a little utility
called Shutdown Addin. I'm going to give it a try.

Interesting little program .... but seems to only show when Outlook and Word
are running, but no other mystery programs that may be running ... like
Google Desktop. Shutdown actually seems to actually shut Outlook down so the
"data file did not close properly" error doesn't keep popping up. I've
opened and closed Outlook several times since installing Shutdown without a
problem. I'll give it a few more days though before I spend the $5 to
register it so I don't get the "evaluation" notice every time. No sense
wasting $5 if it doesn't do the job at least 90% of the time.
